Power of Your Word: Consciousnessand Intent in Daily Life

Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. teaches that your word is not merely communication—it is the force of intent that animates your life. The body and mind are not what you fundamentally are; they are instruments moved by a deeper energy or spirit. Your words—particularly the agreements you make through "yes" and "no"—direct that energy toward manifestation or non-manifestation. To live impeccably with your word means taking responsibility for the consequences of your speech and agreements, creating not just your personal reality but the culture you share with others.

What Is Your Word, and Why Does It Have Power?

In the Wisdom Card series reflection, Ruiz Jr. opens with a deceptively simple statement: "I am aware of the power of my word." But what exactly is this power? The card teaching explains that the word is "a force I cannot see but I can see the manifestation of that force." This distinction is crucial. You cannot directly observe intent the way you observe physical objects, yet you can witness its effects everywhere in your life—your relationships, your body's condition, your circumstances, and your emotional state.

Ruiz Jr. uses a metaphor to clarify the mechanics. "In order for an object to move there needs to be a force that moves that object." Just as an external force must act on matter to cause motion, an internal force animates your body and mind. This force—called spirit, soul, intent, life, or God depending on your tradition—is what you fundamentally are. "I am not this body. I am not this mind. I am the force that animates it that gives it life." The implication is radical: your body and brain are instruments, not the center of your being. The same energy that moves your arm or your leg is the same energy that creates a thought. And at the root of every belief system you hold, according to Ruiz Jr., there is a choice—a yes that gives it power.

How Do "Yes" and "No" Shape Your Reality?

The teaching emphasizes two three-letter and two-letter words as the fundamental tools of creation: yes and no. These are not casual utterances. They are the moments where you choose to direct your animating energy toward manifestation or away from it. "The three-letter word represents the moment where I choose to use the energy that animates this body that animates this mind to manifest something. I can think of all these possibilities in life and if I like one of them I'm going to say yes to that possibility manifesting it."

Conversely, "no" is the moment you choose not to direct that energy. "The two-letter word represents the moment where I choose not to use the energy that animates this body and mind to create a single thing. For as long as I say no thy won't be done." This teaches that every "no" you speak—to yourself, to others, to potential outcomes—is an active withdrawal of your creative energy from that direction. The inverse is equally powerful: by saying "yes" to something, you commit your animating force toward its realization.

Ruiz Jr. frames this in terms of infinite possibility: "Which makes my yes that infinite possibility because I am alive to create it to manifest it." When you withhold your yes, you preserve the open field of potential. When you give your yes, you collapse possibility into actuality through your commitment and agreement.

What Does It Mean to Be Impeccable With Your Word?

Impeccability with the word is the practical application of this understanding. It is not perfectionism or speaking only sweetness. Rather, it is integrity and clarity. Ruiz Jr. states: "To be impeccable with the word is to know that I can use my own intent to heal, to love, to create a bridge that allows us to understand one another, to create the story of my life, to say yes to things I want to say yes to in the form of agreements."

This definition reveals multiple dimensions of impeccability:

  • Intent as a tool for healing and love: Your word, backed by conscious intent, has the capacity to restore and connect. When you speak with awareness of the force behind your words, you can use language to bridge misunderstanding rather than deepen it.
  • Creating the story of your life: Your agreements—the yeses and nos you voice and think—compose the narrative arc of your existence. You are, in effect, authoring your life through the words you commit to.
  • Conscious agreement: Impeccability means saying yes only to what you genuinely choose, and saying no only when you truly mean it. Half-hearted agreements drain your energy without manifesting your desired outcome.
  • Responsibility for consequences: Ruiz Jr. emphasizes: "I am responsible for the integrity and clarity of what I say. I am responsible for the consequences of what I say." This is not blame or guilt; it is ownership. When you recognize that your word has power, you also recognize that you are accountable for what you create with it.

How Does Individual Word Create Collective Reality?

The teaching moves beyond personal manifestation to the cultural sphere. "My words have a meaning because I agree with that meaning, and we create a civilization, a culture by the mutual agreements by which we understand each other. And we create peace and respect through that expression of love and that is a choice."

This insight shifts the question from "What do I create for myself?" to "What do we create together?" A civilization is built on shared agreements—about what words mean, what behavior is acceptable, what values matter. If you are impeccable with your word in your relationships and in your speech, you contribute to a culture of clarity and respect. Conversely, if you use your word carelessly or deceptively, you participate in creating confusion and disconnection, even if unintentionally.

Ruiz Jr. frames the stakes simply: "And can create the most perfect nightmare are the most harmonious dream." The same power of agreement that allows a group to coordinate toward mutual harm also allows them to coordinate toward mutual flourishing. The difference is the integrity and consciousness with which you use your word.

What Role Does the Toltec Artist Play in This Teaching?

Ruiz Jr. invokes the Toltec tradition, which is central to the family's teachings. "Remember the Toltec means artists, and I'm creating the work of art that is my life through my word as a focal point by which I will go in that direction in life and create and manifest."

This framing recontextualizes the work of living. You are not trying to survive, achieve, or escape. You are creating a masterpiece. Your word is the instrument or brush; your intent is the artist's vision; your life is the canvas. The Toltec artist does not apologize for creating—that is the essence of being alive. Nor does the artist create carelessly. Each stroke matters; each agreement shapes the whole. When you approach your life as an artist approaches a work of art, impeccability is not a burden but a natural expression of respect for the work itself.

How Should You Apply This Teaching to Your Daily Life?

The practical takeaway is present tense: "At this very moment I am alive to manifest and give power to my word in the same way I give power and life to this body and this mind." This moment is not hypothetical. Right now, you are either consciously directing your animating force through clear agreements, or you are scattering it through half-hearted yeses, ambiguous nos, and unconscious speech.

To apply this teaching, consider:

  • Notice your agreements: Audit the yeses you have given. Are they truly yours, or are they inherited, coerced, or habitual? Do your agreements serve the life you want to create?
  • Clarify your nos: Where are you withholding your energy? Are these nos protecting something valuable, or are they blocking possibilities worth exploring?
  • Speak with awareness: Before you speak, pause and ask: Do I mean this? What force am I directing with these words? What am I agreeing to or refusing?
  • Take responsibility: When you speak, own the consequences. Don't blame others for how they received your words, but also don't apologize for having boundaries. Clarity is a form of love.
  • Create consciously: Remember you are an artist. Every word is a brushstroke in the work of your life. Are you creating the harmonious dream or the nightmare? That choice belongs to you.

Where to Go From Here

This teaching is foundational to The Fifth Agreement, which expands on impeccability with the word as one of four practices for personal transformation. If you resonate with the idea that your word is the instrument of your creative force, you may want to explore the full book or Ruiz Jr.'s other teachings on domestication—the process by which you absorb agreements from your culture and may reclaim the ones that don't serve you.

You might also examine your relationship with silence and listening. If your word is a force, then so is your capacity to receive the word of others. Impeccability includes knowing when to speak and when to listen, when to say yes and when to say no, and how to use language to build bridges rather than walls. The power of your word begins with the awareness that you have it. From there, the question becomes: What will you create?

[0:09] hello good morning

[0:11] my name is don miguel ruiz jr welcome to

[0:14] another edition of

[0:16] the wisdom card series today

[0:19] is april 15 2021

[0:22] and today i'm going to read from the

[0:24] deck of cards that are based

[0:25] on the book the fifth agreement

[0:29] written by don miguel ruiz and don jose

[0:32] ruiz

[0:33] and published by hay house publishing

[0:36] and amber allen publishing

[0:39] today's card reads like this i am aware

[0:43] of the power of my word

[0:48] the word is a force i cannot see

[0:51] but i can see the manifestation of that

[0:53] force

[0:54] the expression of my word which is my

[0:57] own life

[1:02] i am not this body i am not this mind

[1:06] i am the force that animates it that

[1:08] gives it life

[1:10] which means i am the whole you can

[1:13] understand maybe like this

[1:15] in order for an object to move there

[1:18] needs to be a force that moves that

[1:20] object

[1:21] if i use a little nautil there in order

[1:25] for the tunnel to move

[1:26] there needs to be another wall that

[1:28] moves it

[1:31] means matter so this body is

[1:34] this minus

[1:38] is the force that gives it both life

[1:43] you might know it as spirit you might

[1:45] know it as soul

[1:47] you might know it as intent life god

[1:49] whatever your tradition has taught you

[1:51] it is

[1:53] that's what i really am i am

[1:56] that force that gives life to this body

[2:00] and this mind so you can say from that

[2:03] point of view

[2:04] the energy i use to move my arms to move

[2:08] my

[2:08] legs it's the same energy i use to

[2:10] create a thought

[2:11] and at the root of every belief i have

[2:14] in my belief system

[2:15] there is a yes that gives it power

[2:18] that three letter word represents the

[2:21] moment where i choose to use the energy

[2:23] that animates this body that animates

[2:25] this mind to manifest

[2:27] something i can think of all these

[2:30] possibilities in life

[2:31] and if i like one of them i'm going to

[2:33] say yes to that possibility

[2:36] manifesting it and every other

[2:39] possibility i'm gonna say

[2:40] no that two-letter word represents the

[2:43] moment where i choose

[2:44] not to use the energy that animates this

[2:46] body and mind

[2:48] to create a single thing for as long as

[2:50] i say no

[2:51] thy won't be done which makes my yes

[2:56] that infinite possibility because i am

[2:59] alive to create it to manifest it

[3:02] thus my word that empty symbol

[3:07] gains meaning and intent

[3:10] because the same force that animates

[3:12] this body gives it power

[3:16] it has the same ability as the movement

[3:19] of my arms this body

[3:24] to be impeccable with the word is to

[3:27] know that i can use my own intent

[3:30] to heal to love to create a bridge that

[3:33] allows us to understand one another

[3:36] to create the story of my life

[3:39] to say yes to things i want to say yes

[3:41] to in the form

[3:43] of agreements

[3:46] it is the expression or the instrument

[3:50] i use to create the work of art

[3:53] that is my life remember the word

[3:56] toltec means artists

[4:01] and i'm creating the work of art that is

[4:03] my life

[4:05] through my word as a focal point by

[4:09] which i

[4:10] will go in that direction in life

[4:15] and create and manifest

[4:18] i am responsible for the integrity

[4:22] and clarity of what i say

[4:26] i am responsible for the consequences

[4:29] of what i say meaning

[4:32] or what i say yes to

[4:36] so my words have a meaning

[4:40] because i agree with that meaning

[4:44] and we create a civilization a culture

[4:47] by the mutual agreements by which we

[4:50] understand

[4:51] each other and we create

[4:55] peace and respect

[4:59] through that expression of love

[5:04] and that is a choice and can create the

[5:07] most perfect nightmare

[5:09] are the most harmonious dream

[5:13] and with that impeccability of the word

[5:15] i will create that harmonious dream

[5:18] in my own life in my own story

[5:22] and every relationship that i am in

[5:25] because at this very moment i am alive

[5:29] to manifest and give power

[5:33] to my word in the same way i give power

[5:37] and life to this body and this mind

[5:42] and my love

[5:46] i hope you have a wonderful rest of your

[5:48] day and enjoy

[5:50] everything in life have fun

[5:55] and enjoy no longer being afraid

[5:59] of the power of your word

[6:04] cheers

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the teaching, your word is the expression of intent—the energy that animates your body and mind. While you cannot directly observe intent like you observe physical objects, you can see its effects in your life circumstances, relationships, and reality. The word translates invisible intent into visible manifestation through the agreements you make when you say yes or no.
When you say yes to something, you commit your animating energy toward manifesting it; when you say no, you withdraw that energy. Every agreement you make through these two words directs the force that gives your life its power. Over time, the cumulative effect of your yeses and nos shapes the story and circumstances of your life.
No. Impeccability means integrity and clarity, not positivity or people-pleasing. It means knowing you have the power to heal or harm through your words, taking responsibility for your agreements, and using language consciously to create understanding—even when that requires difficult conversations or clear boundaries.
Civilization is built on mutual agreements about what words mean and what behavior is acceptable. When you use your word with impeccability, you contribute to a culture of clarity and respect. Conversely, careless or deceptive speech participates in creating collective confusion. Your personal integrity with your word is a foundation of the collective reality you share.
The Toltec were known as artists. The teaching reframes your life as a work of art you are creating through your word. This perspective means you are not struggling to survive but actively creating a masterpiece. Impeccability becomes a natural expression of respect for the work, not a burden imposed from outside.
Yes. The teaching emphasizes that you are alive right now, at this moment, with the capacity to direct your animating force. You cannot undo the past, but you can become aware of which agreements no longer serve you and consciously choose new ones going forward, thereby shifting the direction of your life.
Pause before you speak or agree to something and ask: Do I truly mean this? What am I committing my energy to? Take responsibility for what you say and its consequences. Notice where you are unconsciously inheriting agreements from your culture. Audit your yeses and nos to see if they align with the life you want to create.
